Shapes Collage

One of the projects I wanted to try this summer was a collage with Buddy. I saw the idea for a glue bin on Busy Toddler’s blog, and I knew Buddy would love it. He hadn’t used glue before, but I knew he’d enjoy trying it.

I decided to make this a shapes and colors activity as well as an introduction to using a glue stick. We’ve been working on shapes and colors a lot, and Buddy loves it. I cut out a bunch of different shapes in different colors of construction paper and put them in a bag. Then I pulled out a black piece of construction paper and a glue stick.

At first, Buddy just wanted to keep the shapes in the bag. He was very excited about putting glue on the shapes. It was a little challenging for him, though.

Buddy loved how sticky the glue was! He kept putting his fingers in it! We talked about the different colors and shapes as he glued on the shapes. Buddy wanted to use the glue as a crayon, so that was a little challenging for him. I tried to get him to put the shapes on his lines of glue, but he didn’t want to. Eventually, he decided it was easier to put the glue on the shape and then put it down. Buddy liked putting glue on both sides of the paper, which made it a lot easier to put the sticky side on the paper.

When we finished, Buddy was very proud of his collage. It was an easy and fun activity, and I’m sure we will do it again soon.

Cardboard Box Coloring

Sometimes the best activity ideas are the easiest. A long time ago, I saw the idea of coloring in a cardboard box on Pinterest. (See the original idea on Berry Sweet Baby’s blog here.) I immediately thought it was a great idea, but Buddy was too small to do it at the time.

Last week, Buddy received a gift that came in a very large cardboard box. I took the present out, but I didn’t immediately break down the box. Later in the day, I needed an activity for Buddy when I remembered the coloring box idea. I grabbed Buddy, gave him some crayons, and put him in the box.

Buddy loved being in the box! He colored for a bit, and then he had a lot of fun knocking down the sides of the box. Every time he hit the side, Buddy burst out in hysterical laughter!

Buddy loved coloring in the box as well. He actually loved this activity so much, we did it four days in a row! (And then we revisited it again later in the week!)

Buddy loved to take peek-a-boo breaks from his coloring. He loves playing peek-a-boo, and the box made it extra fun.

This was such a great activity! I left the box with crayons in it in our living room for a few days, and we would color whenever we needed a fun activity. It was worth the eye sore to have a quick, fun activity right on hand. We’ve since thrown out the box, but I’m sure we’ll do it again the next time we have a large box delivered to our house.

Drawing with Cars

Recently, Buddy has become more interested in drawing pictures. Most of the time, we just use Crayola washable crayons and sometimes stickers too. However, I’ve been looking for other easy art projects to do with Buddy. I first saw the idea of drawing with cars on Housing a Forest’s blog. We actually tried and failed with this activity last summer, but I thought Buddy was ready to try again.

While Buddy napped, I set up two marker cars and taped down a “road” with some painters tape and white drawing paper. I used packaging tape to tape a Crayola washable marker to the back of each car. The cars were purchased at the dollar store for craft purposes, so I wasn’t worried about the tape wrecking them. It also made it extra fun for Buddy because these were new cars to him.

Buddy loved both the cars and the markers. We drew with one color for awhile and then we colored with the other one. For the most part, Buddy did a good job of coloring on the paper. There were a few times though that the markers went on the floor. Fortunately, they wiped off easily with a wet paper towel.

We did have some problems with cars getting untaped. Buddy didn’t help, because once he realized the markers came off, he was very interested in playing with the cars and markers separately. I was able to retape the cars and get Buddy to draw with them again.

Once we were done, Buddy helped clean up our activity.  He used a wet paper towel to wipe up the marker. Then, he picked up the painter’s tape.  He actually enjoyed these activities almost as much as the drawing with cars activity!

Buddy is really interested in cars and trains right now. If you have any activity ideas for us, please leave a comment!

Heart Stamping Art Project

Last week, Buddy and I made Valentine’s Day sun catchers. This week, I wanted to do another craft related to Valentine’s Day. (What can I say? I love getting ready for holidays.) When I first saw this heart stamping idea on Housing a Forest’s blog, I knew it would be a perfect activity for Buddy.

I started by folding three toilet paper tubes into heart shapes. Then I put each heart on a paper plate with paint. (This was our first time using Crayola washable kid’s paint, and it was great!) I also used painter’s tape to tape down a piece of construction paper.

At first, Buddy was more interested in the containers of paint than the actual project. He wanted to play with the containers like blocks, and he was upset when I took them away. However, once I showed Buddy how to make hearts with the tubes, he was very interested.

Buddy did a great job of stamping hearts on the paper. He wanted to use both ends of the roll for stamping, so that made a bit of a mess. He also liked to see what the paint looked like when it smeared, so not all of the hearts were perfect. But overall, I’m really happy with how it turned out. I would say it’s Buddy’s best art project yet!

Buddy was really proud of his final product! I think it looks great for art done by a one year old! We will definitely try this again next Valentine’s Day.

Window Finger Painting

When I saw the blog post about mess free paint bags on Parenting Chaos’s blog, I knew I wanted to give it a try. I love finding activities where I already have all the materials at home. For this one, all I needed was a ziplock, some paint, and painter’s tape.

I put some red, yellow, and orange paint in the bag because I was ready for fall. (If you notice, Buddy is still in shorts and short sleeves. It’s been so hot here!) I used painters tape to tape it to the sliding glass door in our kitchen.

Buddy wasn’t sure what to think of the paint at first. However, once he saw me draw some lines in the paint, he was very interested. Buddy had fun pressing his hands into the bag and seeing the prints. He also enjoyed picking up the bag of paint and squishing it.

This activity didn’t hold Buddy’s attention for too long, but he did enjoy with it. I think  once Buddy is a little older, this will be even more fun for him. If you have any other ideas for finger painting, please leave a comment. I’m always looking for new ideas!

Edible Finger Paint

This week for Make it Monday, I made edible finger paint for Buddy. Since I haven’t done finger painting with Buddy before, I wanted an edible recipe in case Buddy wanted to taste it.  I found this recipe from Meri Cherry that used only yogurt and food coloring.  For each color, I used a couple spoonfuls of plain yogurt and two drops of food coloring. (For the purple, I did one drop of blue and one drop of red.)

I put the paint in a muffin tin to make it easy for Buddy to reach all of the different colors. I also used painters tape to tape down a piece of paper, so the paper would stay in one place.

Buddy put his fingers into the paint right away. He was very interested in the paint, but he wasn’t as interested in putting it on the paper. After I showed him how to put the paint on the paper, he starting putting paint on the paper too.

Trying to figure out how to finger paint.

Having lots of fun.

Buddy had a great time playing with the paint, especially in the tin. Once he realized he could make a noise by banging the muffin tin against the counter, he had a great time doing that as well.

I can make a lot of noise with this tin!

Ooh - paint is so squishy!

This turned out as a great sensory activity. Buddy enjoyed seeing the colors, feeling the cool paint, and hearing the noise of the clanging tin. He didn’t taste the paint, but it would have been fine if he tried it. Even though the actual painting was a mess, I still think it was a great activity.
